A good friend of mine just put his truck in the shop because his truck started smoking and lost all kinds of power. Ford repaired something with the EGR and replaced a head gasket. total cost $4400!!!!!! what in the hell costs so much. The truck only has 125000 miles and no power adders.
The cab needs to come off to do the head gaskets. Couple that with the high labor rate costs and you get a high repair bill. I am sure that they replaced the EGR cooler as well. I am also quite certain that they repalced both head gaskets and quite possibly the head (s) as well. They have a very tight tolerance as to wether they can be machined down or not.
Maybe look at the bill and post what was done and someone will let you know if the price was fair. Also where are you located.
yea ford repairs can be damn expensive.my old 6.0 cost me 6200 dollars in repair bills 1 time.that was for egr replacment all 8 injectors a turbo and a body alighnment.so i sold and bought my new 6.4.

Well there was a double whammy for your friend. Both problems are not cheap fixes on these trucks as they are pretty labor intensive(especially with head gasket repairs). Couple two expensive type of repairs for inflationary times(the hourly labor charge went from 75/hour(which is very competitive given the area that I live in) to 90/hour, glad I decided to do my own stuff(although that came about before the hike in hourly labor rate) and there you go.

I thought I read somewhere from one of the ford techs on here that the standard ford dictum is to just replace heads rather or not they could be machined?
I think there is a debate on that as well. If I were doing the repair I would replace the heads. I have read on here that some are milling but with little or no success. I dont like to do the same job twice so its a simple decision for me.

Well you can add one success story as I lucked out, although the machine shop that I went to has a wonderful reputation in the performance vehicle world down here in hickville.
Well thats the other side of the coil Tex. When the heads get sent out if the machine shop does a poor job then I the tech in turn dont fixit right the first time. Never ending cycle.
I am glad it worked out for you though. Definatly a big savings if they can be milled and done right.

Oh understand that 100% and I can definately understand where you stand on just replacing the heads.
