Econoline questions
The number of teeth on the plastic speedo gears depends on the rear end ratio, tire size, and type of transmission (A/T, 3 speed manual, and the DAGENHAM 4 speed...yes, the same trans that was used in some English Fords).
And...there are two gears.
One gear slips over the output shaft, this is the DRIVE gear.
The other gear fits on the end of the speedo cable, this is the DRIVEN gear.
There are: 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 tooth driven gears. All are still available from Ford, as they use the same ones now they used back then.
Do you have the old speedo cable? If so, is the housing intact? You can buy just the core of the cable. Most autoparts stores carry it, you just measure the old core, cut the new one to fit and install it using a graphite type lubricant.
1961/63: C2UZ17260E is the part number for the complete cable & housing.
MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghampton NY has ONE.
This is the only obsolete Ford parts seller, or Ford dealer that has it.
Phone number: 607-722-5371.
btw: While touring the UK in 1999 (we rented a car), there was a heat wave, or what passes for a heat wave on your side of the pond. This was just before Easter.
The paper said..."you better put your chocolate bunnies in the fridge, because tomorrow the temperature is expected to reach 70!"
That's 70 degrees Fahrenheit, not Celsius.
We found out it makes no difference when one tours the UK. We came back in May 2002, it rained more at that time than it did in March/April of 1999.
It didn't rain the day all the ceremonies marking the Queens 50th year took place in London. We had no klew that was to occur, so we lucked out.

Its the drive gear im after mainly, it is severely worn in the middle of the threads, http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm seems to have the bits I need, it's just the cost of stripping the trans again making me delay this item, do you know if I would be able to convert the speedo to mph using a different driven gear?
The weather you experienced sounds about right, we don't get any dry seasons as such just degrees of wet!!
the best weather forecast over here is look out the window!
cheers

MODEL E104: = E100 / 4350 lbs. MGVWR
TRANS A: Ford 3 Speed Manual
AXLE 02: Ford WCC Rear Axle / 4.00-1 ratio / non Limited Slip / 2300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity
MGW: Maximum Gross (Vehicle) Weight (Rating): 4350 lbs.

SPEEDOMETER DRIVE GEAR (only one it shows for this application): CODR-17285-A / 6 teeth // To figure out the correct driven gear, I need the tyre size.
No Ford dealer or obsolete seller shows the gear. :-(
Hello again guys, I have another problem with the old girl, got a leak and movement where the driveshaft meets the gearbox does anyone know what seal/bushing I need to sort this out as I am struggling a bit working it out with the parts cd, cheers. thinking of changing the whole engine gearbox trans axles susp etc for Jaguar xj6 next yr, as the cars are cheap and plentiful over here, engine is a straight 6 and the axles are used alot in Hot Rods over here as the axles are bulletproof and the whole rear axle assy is in a "basket" config so my mechanic tells me and so easy to fit.

The Jag rear axle assembly sounds interesting. Let us know how it works out when you get it done. Might be I might do the same.
As for your seal and movement It has been a very long time since I worked on mine and do not recall them.
My 61 manual shows the rear seal on the transmission, but no part number.
As for movement, I'm not sure. But it seems the rear bearing on the output shaft maybe wore a bit causing the meovemnt or play that will wear a new seal again. That means pulling the trans rear assembly off where the speedo cable connects. Then replace the bearing seals and gaskets on the back half of the transmission.

Thanks 66, I might get my mechanic to have a look inside then and see if he can see anything worn, it's not leaking alot he said and may be from when it was rebuilt, as it has only really been out twice since getting on the road due to buying a house and my job i hardly have a chance.
with regards to the jag bits, my man said something about everything being attached to the axle or something and was only 4 bolts and you could swap the leafs for springs easily but don't quote me on that as he lost me half way through! He has got jag running gear on his 60's Bedford CA van with a 80's vauxhall senator (GM) 3litre engine and it goes very well, he said the only real problem is the steering column angle but he solved it on his Bedford which is a short nosed mid engined van like the econo, Ill ask him for more info and try and remember a bit more!

Check out sites called vintage vans. or vannin. These are also guys into the early vans. They would be interested in what you have done and the mechanics old Bedford. Seen a few of them in my yonger days. Don't see any around here anymore, not even a Thames van.
There's a fair few Bedfords about still here but the Thames 400E is getting as rare as rocking horse **** and spares even worse though as its based on the econoline I would have thought some stuff would fit but over here alot of people want to keep their classics stock. I think the Ford Transit was such a leap forward and a success when it came out over here that everything else got scrapped off, we don't have the space for all those scrapyards hidden in the woods and deserts you guys have and also with the weather the stock gets recycled pretty quickly. The classic van and pickup scene is starting to getting bigger here now so hopefully will stop the rot.

(Both these bushings are identical. Ford changed the part number suffix when they changed the package quantity in the late 1980's)

ordered the parts from green sales and tried to order the speedo gear but the guy dosn't even do credit card processing nevermind worldwide shipping!
the only way he will do it is if I find someone over your side that will buy it then forward it on to me, it looks like I will have to give my uncle in LA a shout.

All sorted!
Rang Miller Obsolete on the off chance they still had the cable - they do so that's on its way, the seal and bush have already arrived I think, got a fed ex international missed delivery today and have got the speedo drive gear being shipped to my uncle in CA tomorrow morning! cost a bit in calls as those guys don't do on-line but its worth it for a working speedo, only thing i may need is the driven gear,I may have it so will check when I get home.

I can't find the driven gear so need to get one, I am running a 15" wheel with an overall tire diameter of approx 25", a 4.00 gear ratio, 3spd box and 6 tooth drive gear but I cant see a number on the speedo dial for the number of revolutions per mile e.g.1000, 940 etc.
My calculations depending on how accurately I am measuring the tyre (surely tire pressure and tread wear will affect this?) and taking it as 1000 revs/mile as (I don't know what that actually is) come to either a 19 or 20 tooth gear. Also is the speedo mph or kmph as it doesn't say?
thanks again for any help

That sound like a question for the transmission section here. May get someone who works in a tranny shop that could help there.
I know we have a retired trans guy here in the Man/ Sask chapt. I will see if I can contact him to check this thread. Maybe he can answer for you.
