What year is your truck? Around 2002 or so they started coming with a little silver "key" that attaches on the end of the rod pictured above. Look in your glove box to see if it's there. It's a round thing about 2" - 3" long and has a spring on one end that is supposed to keep it from falling off the extension rod.

Thanks big time! I though I was doing something wrong. It's an 06 F350 and I picked her up used with nothing in the glove box. If you or someone on the forum had a pic they could share, I would know what I'll have to shop for. Better yet, where I could purchase one would be real sweet! Thanks You! Paul K.
Go see your dealer, they can get the right key for you, probably cost at least $20. Someone else here has had to get one before and hopefully they will chime in with the exact price.
I have the same problem you have! My dealer told me to go to a tire dealer, they may be able to remove the lock. My dealer also told me he couldn't get a key for me. I find that hard to believe, I am going to check another Ford dealer. Good Luck to You! Mike
Don't feel bad. The first time I tried to lower mine, I almost broke the pole from shoving it down in there trying to get it to catch on something. Then later I accidentally dropped mine down in the spare and after grabbing one from another truck I learned they were not a universal fit.
The Ford dealer should have a master set they can use to match up which one you need, then order the right one for you.
Here's a picture of mine, along with the plastic holder it comes in.
That number is the engineering number--The part number should be
2C3Z-1A380-AA. This is for a 2003 truck--Yours might be different.
Show the picture or give that engineering number to your local Ford
dealer, and he should be able to get you one for your year truck.
I had a similar problem with my used truck. I had taken mine down as dealers told me that they could not get a key for it. Well that is the wrong info. Here is the link to McGard. They supply the keys for those locks. Call them as I did and they will give you the dealer name that has the master keys. They can then give you the key number and order you the key. Mine was # 253. I noticed that you did not supply your state?? I live in Michigan and there are only three dealers in this state that has those master keys. I was lucky that one was not far from where I live.
Here is the link:
You can pop the fitting the key fits into out I've heard and just use the "hook" on the end of the crank to lower the spare. Could be a real pain to get to with the tire in there though.

Thanks for the link, I will call them in the morning before going to the dealer. Sounds like the best course of action. Glad to hear you had good luck with them. Paul K.
Would like to thank everyone for your gracious help and instructions in getting a replacement spare tire key. Will have a new key Wednesday. cheers! Paul K.
Once again I recommend everyone go and look in their glovebox for this key. If you have one make sure that the little postcard has been filled out with your information and VIN number and send it in to McGard. This will register that specific key to your VIN number so if you, or any future owner loses the key McGard can look it up by the VIN and send a new one.
Wow! Thanks for pointing this out. I never knew I needed this. Of course, I should have checked the manual. I just assumed it was like all other trucks I have owned - stick the crank in and lower the tire. Lucky for me I haven't had any flats yet. (obviously) I did find the key and sent in the card. Thanks everyone.
