i have a 460 thats in my 69 ford and i just installed a nitous oxide kit on it and need to retard the timing 3-4 degrees but the problem is i don't know how so could someone tell me step by step kinda walk me though this? how do i check to see what its at right now?
or could somebody just show me some pictures of your 460 because mine does not have a timing pointer (i think thats what you call it) so could yall jjust show me a pic of one and where to get one would a autoparts store have it
I don't have a pic but its on the lower left as you are facing the motor. I remember from high school a long time ago the most important part of nitrous was keeping the fuel pressure up. There is more than one timing setting. There is the initial timing, vacuum and the mechanical flyweights that add up to total timing. If you are playing with nitrous and not up to the engine adjustments your are asking for trouble. It likes head gaskets too. I hope you are up to rebuilding some engines. Good luck.
You didn't say, do you have a timing light? If so, start the engine & warm it up. Disconnect the vacumm advance to the carb, if you have one. Loosen the distributer so you can turn it. Hook up the timing light with the motor running, positive & negative terminals of the battery and the funny looking thing goes on the #1 spark plug wire. Point the timing light on the timing pointer, by the crankshaft pullies on the left side of the front of the engine as you face it from the front of the truck. It is really the right side of the front of the engine when you are sitting behind the wheel of the truck.
If you have trouble seeing the timing marks on the harmonic balancer, you will have to clean it off and mark them with something like finger nail polish.
Another option is to use MSD's ingnition box with a variable timing controler so that you can run your engine at the correct timing and then retard it from the cab when you are going to use the Nitruous.
well thanks for the info but it turns out that i dont have the pointer the only thing i can think of is the po didnt put it back on so now i need to find one and the nitrous kit is only a 100 shot and i have good self control so im not worried about blowing this motor i know alot about nitrous but have never timed a motor so i thought i would ask just to make sure i do it right. i have read alot about it and talked to a few poeple so i think i will be ok
"Only a 100 shot" is a lot of Nitrous. On a otherwise completely stock motor, most big block Ford builders say a 50-75 at the most if you want to have your engine last any worthwhile amount of time.
its not stock and i have seen 4 cyld handle alot more and i have already ask and alot of people on here told me it would be fine as long as i know how to use it thats why im setting the timing, colder plugs, wo switch, and its a wet kit. but thanks anyways im not the kinda guy that goes around trying to kill myself and it has never been to a drag strip
read the post again daddy it says it has never BEEN not never goin. the point was i dont abuse the truck i really want to take it to the strip but its not ready so its not goin and even when it is ready it wont go that much.
