I've had a bad day. I was coming down out of the mountains with my horse trailer and 3 horses. The brakes were overheating and downshifting ( automatic trans) didn't work so I got the brilliant idea to put it in 4wd and just creep down the hill. When I got to a flat spot, I unlocked the hubs and put it in drive and nothing. I'm in Fresno Ca. and I've read all the good things about John Woods. What kind of money are we talking about? Thanks for any advice you can give me. 1999 f-250 7.3 4wd

I'm not sure on the price but a JW trans will be the last transmission you will need. A guess $4000, but it's built and I mean built.
I pull a 4-horse bumper-pull with my Excursion, as well as a 31' travel trailer weighing around 10K lbs. I also foot brake it all the time, spooling the turbo up to launch in 4-wheel just for grins and giggles. This thing is bullet proof. It hasn't skipped a beat or hiccupped at all.
I had John install a torque convertor lock up switch and a 6.0L tranny cooler while I was down there last year. That will help keep the heat down a lot this year when I tow the TT through the winding grade into Yosemite.
BTS. 1-870-422-3673. I bought one and have no regrets. He has no reasons that I have heard of to void your warranty. After the 2 yr written warranty, he still fixes your trans for free. Not sure who else will do that but that is even if you snow plow with it.

No chance the transfer case got bumped into neutral, is there? I know...silly question, but never hurts to check . Living in Fresno, John Wood Automotive would seem to be a no-brainer...450 miles to Holtville.

Based solely on what people write about him on the forums, because i've never seen how Brian builds his transmissions, nor have I talked to him, I'd have to agree that BTS makes a great 4R100. His builds may even be on par with JW's builds, but since the OP is on this side of the coast, within a days travel of JW, in my opinion BTS would be a far second place when it comes to choices for replacements.
Just my opinion. Not trying to start a JW vs. BTS thread.
IMO, his builds ARE on par with JW and the service is 2nd to none. He has helped me with diagnosis and even walked me thru a shifter repair although none of them were his products. His warranty is the same even AFTER the 2 yr written warranty. Not sure if JW is that way since I have never heard anyone say that.
Not sure why that would matter. I had BTS ship me a trans that pretty much any shop monkey can install. Now if you are talking about driving to the shop, I'd have to agree that JW would be a good choice.

I agree with this.
My transfer case gave up the ghost on a downhill stretch. It simply fell out of gear without making any noises at all. Turns out the shift fork for the high/low range gear selector had it's fingers burned off due to a weak design.
It had operated pretty much without getting any lubrication, even with a full load of the proper lubricant.
I was stuck on the top of Mt. Rainier, WA and had to pay $500.00 to get towed out of there.
Here is the thread that I posted when it all went down.
There are pictures inside on latter half of the thread.
Thanks For All Of Your Input. I Think You Talked Me Out Of Going To The Neighborhood Guy And Just Rebuilding The Transmission. This Forum Is Really Great.
