Thinking of changing out the engine in the 97 Aerostar with 260k. Came across a 70k 4.0 except its from a 98 -00 year Explorer Vin code x, same as mine. The Junk Yard Hollander interchange #71240 Versus #71340 says it wont work!!. I know i may have manifolds etc to change over but are there other issues that would make it a hassle? It is complete without the starter and alternator.
Phisically this is the same engine, but aeros had different electronic engine controll, sensors , ECU and wiring. SO leave stock sensors and wiring.....

I think the Aerostar received 4 liter engines with different head configurations, which required different calibrations for fuel and timing. So it may not be a simple matter of swapping in the newer engine, and installing the old electronics. The new installation can result in an engine that's always pinging or running pig rich.
Also, I thought the 4 liter engine in those explorers were OHC? Maybe I got the years confused.
Okay! I know that Ranger 4.0 fits aero w/o any problem, but many people swaped engines of Rangers and put 4.0 from Explorer to ranger... Newer heard about pinging ore rich mixture.... I put 3.0 from Taurus in aero, then I overbore it and ECU easily updated mixture for bigger pistons with O2 sensor. Runs in closed loop now. I have some pinging only after my battery was removed from van...
the later Aeros were a hodge podge of different parts and engines as they closed the production line out and cleaned up the junke that had no use in other product lines.
still love mine.
test drove another new Sprinter with the 3L Mercedes diesel. engine great but interior CHEAP with CHEAP spine masher seats.
I thought the same thing about sprinter, awful interior. The conversion van companies
(how many of THOSE are left ?) do a makeover, seen one once..however, big $$$
