My truck started having issues about three weeks ago making turns. At first it was just occasionally and now I can hardly turn the wheel from a dead start. I need some suggestions on what to look at first...I can just replace the pump and see if that takes care of the issue but I remember someone talking about the U joints.
Make sure you fluid level is good in your pump. Remember, it uses ATF and not PSF. Any issues with you braking? U joints will usually make a popping noise when turning.
How does your actual steering wheel feel? Any new play or maybe a new feel (grabbing, grinding, pulsing) anything out of the ordinary? This past winter the bearings in my steering column went out on me, had to put two new bearings in the actual steering column itself. I ended up having ball bearings falling onto the floorboard while I was driving it on home, that'll sure make the ole' butt cheeks pucker!, that was a crazy adventure!
Yep on the cat whine...I’m hearing a faint whine and I’m hoping that is the issue. The steering is great now that I replaced the lower and upper ball joints. The hard turning started before the lower ball joint went bad but I fixed that and took a bunch of play out of the front end. Now I’m trying to figure the steering issue out. Does anyone know of a good write-up with pictures on how to tackle the power steering issues?
well mine was turning hard , and turned up to be balljoints and steering stabilizer.
might want to loook at that too, mine was busted and no oil in it.
Mine was turning hard from a dead stop or at low speed. If I would ride the brake and rev it up it would work fine. I then replaced the ps pump and filled the system with ps fluid. Everything was fine for about five months and now it does the same thing again. Maybe it was the ps fluid??? This is the first time I ever heard not to use ps fluid. I always thought ATF was another option...
It has a one year warrenty from NAPA so I will throw another one on it, but this time I am going to do all the lines as well. Maybe they are coming apart and took the pump out??? My pumps used to go threw oil a lot too. (both of them, but I can't find a ps leak!)
Scott, I would take out all the PSF before you bring it back, and also put ATF in it so it will look red. My owners manual say to use ATF in the powersteeting. If they think you used PSF they might not warranty it.
I would absolutely replace the pump. Mine started steering hard so i replaced the fluid and hoped it would last for a while, but then I was driving and the pump completely stopped working. As a result my brakes also stopped working and when your rolling down the road in a truck that wieghs almost 5 tons not much is gonna stop it. It was kinda scary!
I flushed the pump and turned the wheel with my finger. Then I drove the truck about 15 miles came back to the drive and I could not turn the wheel...seems that when the power steering fluid and pump gets warm the truck won’t turn worth a darn. The pump is next. I’ve spent more money in parts the last month on this truck than I did on my wife’s wedding ring. Talk about a love hate relationship!
