Hello All - just joined up yesterday and have rec'd a very nice reception into the FTE and have already learned more than I thought I would with my first Ford ever. Since I have a '79 F150 with the 351M, it was suggested that I might introduce myself here too since we all seem to have the same animals taking up space in our driveway, garage or backyard for that matter.
I'm in the middle of an intake swap to an Eddie Performer and it was suggested that while at it, I should consider changing the timing chain. Since ALL of my automotive background is with Bowties, I would like to ask if chain cover is part of the oil pan. Meaning, if I jerk the h2o pump and chain, will I have to drop the oil pan too in order to accomplish the swap? With Bowties, yes, you do. With a Ford, I have no clue. Maybe I should do a search but either way, just wanted to say hey since you'll all be seeing me around here - often. Thanks.
Yes you will. The timing chain cover recceses down into the oil pan. Check under the water pump when you pull it off for corosion. You might have to doctor it up or replace it.
No wonder that darn rope seal was so hard to get in when we were replacing the timing chain, didn't drop the pan. Oh well, it doesn't leak...so I'm happy
