Lack of use is the #1 cause. If you don't drive the truck enough, or when you drive, you don't kick it in the pants to exercise the VGT, then the vanes will rust-up and stick in one position. It's a known issue...
Its odd that it threw a code as I was pulling away from a fuel station. And I was on my way home from 1200 mile trip pulling a trailer. I dont use the truck as a daily driver but when I am towing I am right into it . Tore

It's the #1 cause, not the only cause. Maybe it just got tired and failed... You mention that you just got fuel headed home after a long tow... Did you come in (do you usually come in) from pulling and shut-her down before you let the EGT's drop down to ~=350*F? If not, you may have also just fried the turbo... There's a lot of guesswork with a single code.
My truck was running fine, I just happened to throw the code reader on it for the he** of it and up popped PO299. Took it to the dealer and they put a new turbo on it. Can't tell the diference from before or after.
The truck is an 07 with 19K on it. When I got fuel and the light came on I had to drive thru a small town to find diesel so I dont think it was very hot.
As far as frying the turbo its runs damm good if I did. I will find out how it works Sunday as I am to go pick up a trailer quite a ways away. Tore

Maybe it was just a fluke... You never know with a 6.0!
