Matt is that what you came up with? I too have a 98 explorer eddie bauer and it sags real bad in the left rear quite noticable from the rear I had asked others before no response. are the leaf springs that crappy? You might as well replace the rear shackles too as they were prone to rotting out. let me know how you make out with the new stance.
I've been fighting with the same problem lately on my 2000. Rear sag seems to be almost universal. Don't be surprised if just replacing the leaf springs doesn't bring it up to level, though. I was absolutley mystified when I changed mine out two weeks ago and it didn't seem to get any better. What I have found after EXTENSIVE research on the net - you really wouldn't believe what a topic of conversation this problem is in the blogoshphere - is that the only way to get these trucks level seems to be replacing the stock shackles. Everyone reccomends Warrior WAR 153 shackles which the manufacturer claims will give 1.25" - 2" lift at the back. They come in pairs with all of the mounting hardware included. Most people also reccomend adding a leaf or using a helper spring in conjunction with the after market shackles. I got out the tape measure today and found that I need about 1.25" lift to get level, though, so I am going to try the shackles by themselves first. If I decide I want more I am thinking about adding the Hellwig progressive rate helpers, but I am hoping that I'll be happy with just the shackles.
I have a 96 Explorer Sport 4x4 and had this problem with the sagging rear lear spring(s). I replaced the rear springs (the mono leaf on the Sport) with a set from a 4-door Explorer. This helped quite a bit but it was still a bit uneven. Turned out to be that the Torsion bar in the front of the vehicle was causing the problem. Once I had that adjusted, it leveled right out.
Have a good front-end shop take a look at it. You may be able to solve the problem without replacing springs. If you do have to replace the springs in the rear, it is a very simple swap.
