'01 escape o/d light flashing

'01 escape o/d light flashing
i have an '01 escape v6. o/d light flashes a few min after startup. wont shift from 2nd to 3rd. after playing with the throttle (read: flooring it several times) it finally shifts and then acts normally. have heard of possible bad sensor. any ideas?
