The tailgate insert that KenworthFan has a pic of was offered only from 85-86 (I have one of these) found on the XLT Lariet
The one UncleStosh is showing was available from 80-84. (I have 2 of these) - the sometimes had the blue XLT tailgate badge on them
PS. UncleStosh - there is a blue 82 or 83 Stepside in my local yard. I'll check the tailgate for ya.
If anyone wants the piece I posted a picture of earlier in this post with the letters "F O R'' just give me an offer by PM, Im willing to sell that one if anyone wants it. I should be able to send all the mounting hardware with it, but Im not 100% if I have it all so Id have to check.

Actually, it is all aluminum with a black painted strip across the bottom. The F O R D letters are applied via double back tape and are evenly spaced across the panel. I have one on a rust free tailgate that I have for sale. I'll try and post a pic later tonight.
Actually, the piece you are describing is for the 1980-1984.
Here we go again with the IMPOSSIBLE to find 1985 - 1986 specific trim pieces. I have a 1985 F150, and I feel your pain brother. Trim pieces for the 1985 - 1986 models are the HARDEST to locate. I speak from experience. I got LUCKY and found a new (NOS) one on ebay about a year ago. No one reproduces these. You can find all the others, but not the '85 - '86 version. The only vendor that comes close is Dennis Carpenter, and they have been "promising" these since 2003. I don't know why the trim pieces for these models are avoided like the plague, but they are.
Aluminum tailgate finish panels are designed specifically in these groups:
1980 - 1984: smaller width, "FORD" spread all the way across, trim designation emblem on lower right corner
1985 - 1986: full width, "FORD" on right side, RED ribbed strip on bottom, cut-out for tailgate handle
1987 - 1991: full width, "FORD" on right side, (different style of lettering) RED solid strip on bottom, no cut-out for tailgate handle because handle was relocated for 1987 re-design
1992 - 1996: the same as 1987 - 1991 except "FORD" lettering style changed again, and BLACK solid strip on bottom
I don't know where some of these trims are coming from. My 83 XLT has no model designation (XLT)on it, and the sales brochure shows none. Also the lower black strip on the XLT isn't paint, it's plastic that was applied with an adhesive. My plastic was cracking years ago so I removed it, leaving a nice looking very shiny look (except for the little spots where adhesive was applied).

I hear you on that! Especially those trim pieces we have been looking for ...
Why the 1980-1984 specific trim is easier to find than the 1985-1986 pieces is simple. 1980-1984 = Five years of production. 1985-1986 = two years of production.
The thing is, the 1985 - 1986 specific aluminum finish panel can fit ANY styleside model from 1980 - 1986. So it seems to me, since all of the others are available, and the fact that fuel injection became available starting in 1985 (more likely they are still on the road today) SOMEBODY would reproduce these.
And besides, how many years was the "Nite" package offered? How about first generation "Lightnings?" I seem to see every specific trim piece available for these models.
Hey guys, this is just the thread I am looking for !
I am looking to buy a 1987 F-150 4X4 that supposed to be all original, but the tailgate has the brushed aluminum piece with black strip and FORD off to the right side of the strip. Nothing else is on the entire aluminum piece and I have been told this off of a 92-96 truck !
Any opinions ??
