I've had a hellofa rattling noise in my 01 F150, supercab, 4x2 with the 4.2 v6 this week. It sounded like it was behind the dash. So with the help SEVARAL beer's I took the dash apart. Found nothing loose. But the noise was gone. During a drive home from Wallymart (Beer run) I heard the sound of a piece of heay metal under my truck and the noise was gone. Here's the part number of the bracket I picked up. I know I didn't run over the object. It Had to fall from my truck. Look's like a piece that would bolted to aither an exhaust or intake manifold to remove/re-install the engine. So here goes with the number from the bracket. IL5E-17A084-AA I really don't think I've seen this on my truck before. Again it's an 01, and I've owned it since 02.............
sounds like an exhaust shround, they are usually tin aluminum, and are either place on the top and bottom of the cat converter for heat deflection, and sometimes they are bolted to the underside of the cab to reduce the amount of heat entering the cab from the exhaust....does this help? good luck!
I couldn't find a part number that matches 17A084, but it has something to do with the jack, or how it attaches.
17080 is a jack, 17081 is a jack handle, 17084 is a bolt for the jack retainer, 17085 is the jack retainer plate, 17091 is a jack hold down clamp.
You might contact Ed Olson @ FTEpartsguy.com, he can tell you exactly what 17A084 is from the 2000 Ford master cross reference catalog. The newest one of these I have is from 1989.

No actual Ford part numbers have appeared on parts since 1956.
I think that a part that fell off my truck yesterday and onto my driveway is the same part as described in the original post!! Except mine starts with an one instead of an "I". The number is 1L3E 17A084_AA and has "Ford" stamped on it in a circle. My truck is a 2002 F150, 4.2.
Here is a pic.
Can anyone ID this part from the picture and number stamped on it? Mine was resting on the steering rod against the firewall and making an awful rattling noise until I traced the rattle to the steering rod, and opened up the hood, saw the part on the rod, thought to myself what-the-heck-is-that, and touched it to see if it was rattling, and it fell to the driveway. It must have come from elsewhere under the hood but what are the odds of it just sitting there on that rod?
BTW the flat part of it looks 75% sheared off, smooth, with 25% rough edge?

I was riding up to the top of my driveway last evening and heard a series of clanking sounds that had me concerned. I walked back down the driveway and found the exact same part with stamped part number laying in the driveway. I've driven this truck for over 130,000 miles and it just fell out now? Strange, but it matches the description and experience others have had on here. When I bought the truck, I was told that it was a Ford Corporate vehicle used at one of the assembly plants by a manager. I'm the second owner. I guess that means no dealer responsibility?
Well this is the second one to come off of mine. First one I found laying in the engine compartment like described above, this one came off with a bang and hell of a noise while driving.

So I had this exact thing happen and found the same bracket leaning on the firewall making horrible noises as soon as I picked it up I saw it was broken and had dislodged from the motor. Turns out it's not actually part of the trucks engine it is a bracket to make it easier to lift the engine out. Is this a common thing with 02 f150 mine is a 4.1l v6 xlt... We are also having some oil leaking problems and I have been told it's the rear main seal (which is outrageously expensive to get done at a shop) and I've also been told it's not the main seal but the oil pan gasket. Have you had similar problems?
Bob hasn't owned that truck for a few years, now. I've had the FRONT pan seal go out and look like a front main seal in the V6. Not the rear seal, though. Anything is possible. The best way to tell is pressure wash everything clean, start it up and climb under there to see where it's coming from.
