does anyone know what tranny i have in my 1993 f-250 XL. 5.8 liter 351. V8.
I am having some grinding issues with the tranny in 1st gear and it is automatic, anyone know what would cause this? when i get out of 1st the grinding stops. thanks
look on the door jam
there is a factory sticker with codes for your drive line and suspension
under trans if it has an "E"
you have an E4OD
there will also be a O.D. cancel button on the end of the shift lever
the only other auto that should be in it is a C6, don't know the code for it
If that doesn't help, You could also get underneath the truck, and you can see your shifter on the driver side of the tranny(also called the neutral switch), Put the Parkin brake on, Block the front, Jack up the rear end to have both tires of the ground, And have the truck in park, You can move the shifter on the side of the tranny through every gear, It will go from front to back the first thing your in is park, then reverse, then neutral, then go slow and count the gears you run through, if its 3 gears, then you've got a c6, 4 gears you've got either a c6aod or a E4, 5 gears you've got the E4OD.

Hope that doesn't confuse you.
There's so much wrong in here, I don't know where to start. A '93 w/ a 351 had 2 auto trannies available to it--a C6 (mostly fleet vehicles) and an E4OD. There is no such thing as a C6AOD. There is an AOD (a hydraulically-controlled 3-speed auto tranny with overdrive), but it was not put behind the 351, with good reason). The E4OD is electronically-controlled 3-speed auto tranny with overdrive that was put behind the 300, 302(I think), 351, 460 and the diesels, with a couple different bellhousing versions, starting in '89. It was the replacement for the C6, though the C6 lingered on in fleet vehicles. The C6 was the heavy-duty auto tranny for Ford for much of the '80s, but it was only a 3-speed, with no overdrive. There is no E4 tranny, either, only the E4OD (3-speed with OD, or, if you wish, 4 speed, the top gear being an overdrive gear). None of these trucks got a 5-speed transmission, though the torque converter lockup in OD on the E4OD can almost feel like another shift.
The E4OD will have a pushbutton on the end of the shift lever in '93, and the shift pattern will be P R N (D) 2 1. The door code (under "TR" is 'E').
i don't have the thing at the end of the shifter stick so i know i don't have overdrive. i just looked on my door and there is a "G" under transmission. and i have this shift pattern P R N D 2 1. Reason i am asking is cause i think i might need to replace my tranny.
Does anyone know anything about the grinding issue in 1st gear?
'G' is also a C6. I don't know why it would grind in 1st gear, unless something internal was broken or worn out. Have you checked your tranny fluid (engine hot, idling in park)?
