Hi everyone. Going to look at a 95 eclipse next week for the kid. Its a turbo, AWD 5 speed.
Any feedback on this would be appriciated.
Thanks, Andy
The AWD turbo eclipses are one hot little number, I've always been a fan of them.......HOWEVER I would NEVER own one, the cars themselves are as unreliable as an automobile can possibly be. To add insult to injury any repair on an eclipse will cost at least $1200
These were prone to the "walking crank" syndrome, i.e. end play in the main bearings. With the hood open and the engine running, closely watch the crank / damper pulley while someone pushes the clutch in and out WITH THE TRANS IN NEUTRAL AND YOU STANDING ON THE SIDE OF IT. ... I know it's common sense but that's just my little legal disclaimer. There should be no visible in - out movement.
The cam belt really needs to be changed every 60k.
Check for leaks in the transfer case. It doesn't hold much fluid and will quickly be destroyed if it leaks out.
Pay particular attention to the condition and evidence of mistreatment. These cars tended to be run hard and abused. Repairs and parts are very expensive.
That 4G63 motor, even under boost is plenty reliable IF and I stress IF the maintenence is kept up.
The Eclipse/Talon/Laser was plenty reliable, but the GSX versions w/4WD were obviously more expensive to repair over time.
Only problem by buddy had with his was a head gasket after 180k. Only trouble I had with my 92' after 230k was a sheared differential pin.
They were both great cars, I'd own either. When he traded it in for a new WRX he was thrilled. After 6 months Subaru finally bought it back when they decided that a third of it's off the sales-floor life was spent in the shop for an ignition problem they couldn't diagnose.
