Hey all,
I do not drive my 2000 Navi very often, maybe once or twice every couple of weeks. I went to start it today and saw a puff of smoke come from the tailpipe. it wasn't a huge puff but it was very noticable. after it ran for a few seconds, it stopped. my question is, is this normal due to me not driving that often? is there something i can add to the oil/gas to prevent this from continuing or what? thanks
It's normal with any overhead valve engine with moderate to high mileage on it. Over time, the oil drips down the valve stems and collects in the cylinders and that is what you see burning off on start up. If the engine was started more frequently, there would be less time for the oil to drip down and accumulate, hence no puffs of smoke. You can change the valve stem seals and probably eliminate the puffs, or you can just live with it.
If you're not driving it that much and not for very long, the engine isn't getting hot enough and it's forming carbon deposites. Put some fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank and drive it hard for the next couple of days.
The 4.6 motors seem to have a problem with the valve stem seals. Put 10w30 synthetic blend in it instead of the 5w20 and it should take care of it. That's what my ford garage told me to do.
