What does this 'foil delete' do? I know it means taking the foil off the hot side of your turbo intake pipes but won't that just flood hot air into the engine bay? What is the piont of doing this? I ask because I had to change a power steering line last night and it would have been much easier to do if the inlet pipe hadn't been there but I've been told not to take the pipes off unless I was a Ford mechanic. It don't look that hard but I'm still new to the mechanical part of diesels. Thanks.
The foil delete just allows more whistle to be heard and looks better than that foil does. Pipes are easy on/off. Not sure who told you that but go ahead and take them off when needed.
All they are are rubber boots with clamps. Take them off and jerk the foil off and shine them up. The main thing it does is make the engine look better. Don't worry about the heat. The early 99' trucks didn't have the foil on them. They put the foil because of people complaining of the turbo noise. I didn't really hear more turbo whistle, but some have.
While you have the pipes off clean the boots good and when you install them make sure they don't leak. Take both sides off to clean all 4 boots.
Thanks guys, looks like I've got something else to do this weekend. I didn't like the looks of the foil to start with but figured it had an advantage other than making it quiet. Who wants a quiet diesel? That's one thing I don't like about the new ones, my Uncle has an '08 and it almost sounds like a gas motor.
I agree with everyone else here. If you can operate a nut driver or a ratchet, then you're qualified to take it off. One tip, make sure the boots are clean before you put it back together. Also using some hairspray will help the boots stick to the tube to aid in preventing them from popping off.
