Ignition problems

I have an 84 with a 300 in it and recently replaced the breaker-less ignition mudule with a used one. The original problem, the failing module would quit working and the truck would die at any rpm. This would occour two sometimes three times a trip. After replacing the module I had better than two months without any troubles. Until yesterday while on the highway at just over 2,000 rpm the truck sputters and lurches. It runs fine under 2,000 rpm. Could it be that module again? I could not get a new one in a timely manner the first time but I am wondering if this is the problem or is it a distributor, possibly a vacuum advance issue. I suppose I could buy a new module to try it out..only $100

Thanks

JB

I suspect a fuel problem, it's not getting enough gas to run at
"higher" RPMs. That's what my problem was when that
happened to me, anyway.

Agree with ctubutis....fuel-delivery problem. Suggestion: raise the module so there is air-flow underneath it. Heat kills these units. 3-4 washers will raise it enough so air can flow under it.

I've had the same module for 25 years, so I see no need to raise it, and I'm in 100 degree heat.

If you have an 84 with the module that fits up under the distributor be sure to take an extra with you at all times and get the "special tool" needed to remove and replace it. Checker/Schuck/Kragen sells them in the $30's and they have a five year warranty. Check the fuel filter going into your carburetor as well, if original it is likely very clogged. My 84 I6 has gone through 7 or 8 modules in its life since new and several fuel filters too.

On my 81 various rubber fuel lines had rotted and begun crumbling and there were literally
holes in at least one of 'em (esp the one connecting the rear tank to the steel line). You'd
think it would have leaked gas but I never detected any. <-- Could result in a flow problem

During a different project I replaced a sender unit (mechanical fuel pump at the engine (no
in-tank electric pump) but used a filter that ended up being too restrictive, it didn't allow for
a high enough flow rate. For me, the running-out-of-gas sputtering began at around 60
MPH/3,000 RPM. I'd flip to the other tank and the problem immediately went away, telling
me exactly what the problem was (the sender & filter I had recently installed).

Well thanks for the insight. I mentioned the problem to a few other gearheads at work and they pointed to a fuel problem. I'll replace it tomorrow and check the fuel pressure with a guage also....I'll post an update afterward..

More Ignition problems

Well, I replaced both of the filters. Someone, previous to me, installed one at the carb and butchered the pre bent fuel line. I also replaced the one between the pump and the fuel tank. I still have the sputtering above 2,000 rpm. The tach jumps around a bit when this happens, between 1500 and 2500 rpm. I am wondering if it could be some of the electronics in the distributor. I'll throw a new cap and rotor in and maybe get a few of the internals also. Maybe the pick up coil or the reluctor is bad or cracked. There doesn't appear to be very much slop in the bearings... possibly the vac advance?? I am not sure when that kicks in...

Stay tuned..

John

Bad module

It looks like the used module I picked up for $10 cheaper than a new one was the culprit. I put the old one back in, it craps out intermittently, and there was no hickup at all. Looks like I will be buying a NEW one. Thanks for the help!!!

John.
