Man, do you know it is only twenty to four in the morning Dan?
Yep, , stinkin' insomnia. I'll be heading back to the sack in a little bit.
But for some reason, like clockwork, I wake up this time of night and cannot get back to sleep. I've tried staying in bed to try and get back to sleep, but it is no use. I just toss and turn and then that wakes Mrs Kwik up.
Then nobody is happy.
So I just get up for a while, then return a little while later.

LOL, if you really can't doze back off you can answer my pm if you want. I'll bet it's been 15 years since this air filter has been changed on my eyesore. That's much desired by the general public I guess.

Mark, since you've hijacked our 7.3 section with your VW issues, you will now be required to post a pic of the 15 yr old air filter. I understand it may not have a lot of miles, but I really want to see how that thing is holding up since you've started driving it again.

Will do, just as soon as Dan answers me. As of right now it may not be something I can do myself. When it gets a little lighter out I'll take a picture of the intake setup on this nightmare. A small 6637 type conversion would be neat, but I do not think there is enough room in the engine compartment to accommodate something like that.
Yes it's the deluxe model I guess........LOL....but I only see one clip holding that air box in place. Is that it, and is this something I should try and get to myself or should I take it to the German shop? I only see one snap type clip at the front left corner of the box and no hinges of any kind so it looks like it may be a huge PITA.
Thanx, Mark
I copied your PM to here.
There are supposed to be four clips on your airbox, all identical to one another. If you had a turbo it would be rather dusted by now. Location is at each corner, you can see where they go by the little ledges that are molded into the plastic. The clips hook into some little tabs that are molded into the bottom half of the housing. Your local German Car Repair may have some left over like I do from years ago. If he doesn't, get back to me and I'll see about mailing you some.
The easiest way to get those clips to fasten is to fashion a hook out of something and then get everything properly seated. Lean down on the top of the box, while at the same time pulling up on the clip with your homemade hook in that little middle loop at the top of the clip. It will click into place easily if you use that method.
Also, getting back to your climate control, there should be a tee for that vacuum line to go to where it plugs into the brake booster line. There should be a little check valve between the engine and the tee with the vacuum reservoir line and the climate control line and the tee behind the check valve. Without the check valve, the climate control will fail to defrost every time you step on the gas.
Here are a couple of photo's of the mess. See those braided fuel lines? I had to replace 4 of them to get it back on the road, guess they rotted from sitting so long. They were 30 to 70 bucks apiece used. So the fuel distributor lifts straight up also to get to the filter? I'll bet this damn thing has never been changed if it's this hard to get to.

WOW....must have been a Catholic that designed that! LOL!!
Must leave for work in one minute.
There are three more clips like the one visible on each corner.
Air filter is underneath.
Somebody made a royal mess of those lines while installing them. No sense of order.
What's with all the wiring?

The wiring, yes I agree and will admit to a few of them as my not so handiwork. One of them is to an extra spring loaded toggle switch I have in the cab to activate the starter when the key does not work every once in awhile. The other is to a homemade horn button that was screwed up the last time I had the steering wheel off and I figured another button was easier than pulling the wheel again. My PSD bears no resemblance to the mess I have here, nor did my race car. The only clip I can see is that one metal one that is just a flip down affair and can't find any on the other corners. But you're saying the fuel distributor and all the rest of that mess lifts straight up if and when I find more clips? I paid attention to your first post about making a homemade clip puller, but can't find any clips to pull.
I'll laugh along with you if it makes you happy, but when I first mentioned putting this antique back on the road Dan did offer me any and all help I needed. He's been working on them for 25 years, knows what he's talking about and is a hell of a nice guy. So if you're laughing at my dumb questions I'll try to enjoy the giggle along with you.
