Having a new TC installed and total rebuilt. Tranny guy said the TC was shot and there was metal in the pan and that;s how he came to his conclusion that a rebuild was necessary. Quoated me $1700 for HD-Billett TC and all HD parts, says it will be much better than new stock one. Any comments on quote and diagnosis, thanks.
thats not too bad price wise. quality would have to be something you would have to find out on your own tho. i plan on using bts. higher priced but lifetime warranty is talking pretty heavy into my ear tho.
See if you can get a parts brakedown of what is installed.
You can spend more than 1700 in just parts alone on the trans.
Thats not getting into billet center/output shafts.
TC choice is very important.
Sounds like your getting ready to head down ripoff road if you ask me. As I posted above and as Bill said, parts are an EASY 1700. Heck, good TC will cost you almost half your quote already. Be prepared, I bet your going to have trouble.
Hold the phone here guys. Parts needed depends mostly on what the truck is used for. If this is a stock truck that rarely pulls he is probably getting a decent deal, if those are parts alone and labor is on top of the $1700.

1700 is turn key installed.
They have to cut corners or loose the job.
Not many looking to sink 4 to 5K into an old truck.
Your right in only building as much as needed.
Dont skimp on a choice of a TC.
Ya, every time i go on racer X im looking at a $2400 shopping cart. im doing a performance build (when i get to it and can afford it) but still... $1700? definately get a parts breakdown, and try to get them to let you keep the parts. make sure they arent replacing anything they dont need to, and are replacing what they tell you they're going to. also allows a second opinion afterward. just my .02
Thanks for all the feed back. The actual est. was appr. 1850 and not 1700 and after speaking with the mechanic, he assured me that he was installing a HD-billet TC and replacing parts with superior parts. i did ask to ut corners where he could to save a little money but the main priority was gooding a quality tranny that I would be happy with for some time. I do tow a 12k boat every weekend but only 2 miles each way other than thay it's normal daily driving.
a 280 searay that weighs 12k?? I think I might check your scale again. I worked as a Speed tech engineer at Baja Marine for brunswick corp, designed the 250, and think your off on your weight. Thats still a single right? I did mostly performance engineering, but I thought you could order the 280 in a single and a twin.
