EGR question for 460

I have a 97 Ford F-250 with a 460, and it pings and surges under load. Someone on here told me it may be the EGR valve. Now I hear that there is aEGR position sensor, and a EGR valve pressure sensor. With no check engine light, how do I know which one too aim at first? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Before you go after the EGR valve, I suspect you have a partially clogged catalytic converter. Disconnect the exhaust system upstrem from the catalytic converter and take the truck for a quick spin to test. You'll know right away if this is the problem.

you need to set your ignition timing. you have to unplug the spout conecter and then put a timing light on it. back it down a couple of degree's. it should be set to 10 degree's. you can also run better gas.

to check the egr valve you need to start the engine, unplug the vacuum line. put a vacuum pump on the egr valve. apply vacuum. the engine should stumble or die, and the egr should hold vacuum. if it does then the egr valve is good.
