Brake Question

I have a 7.3 PSD and I just put new brake pads on it. Truck had everything brake wise that came on it from the factory except the pads. Truck has around 85,000 on it now. Drove it to town and back and could smell brakes really bad. Pulled it into the shop and pads looked like they had been worn for a lot longer than what they have been on there. I took everything back apart and reassembled and with the tire still in the air I noticed that when I was tightening the lugs back down that the tire wouldn't budge. As if the brakes were locked on it. Could the caliper be siezed. Sorry so long and thanks before hand.

If you mean they might be hanging up on the rotor, than no I checked that and didn't see any clearance problems. Now that I have thought about it, I did pump the brake pedal 4 or 5 times before putting the tire back on and noticing that, would that have made the caliper pistons tighten up on the pads good enough before haveing the chance to seize up? Thanks for helping though!!

On Edit: I had to push the pistons back inside the caliper to give me room to get it over the pads. If the caliper is seized is that even possible?

No, the pins are what the caliper ride on where your bolts go that hold on the caliper, they do get corroded and hang up not allowing the caliper to move freely.

Oh yes I did notice the top on was doing that. How do you fix that, do you have to buy the whole caliper assembly?

Austin has you set to go. Follow the instructions and if any of the pins in your caliper are stuck, you found your problem.

when I recently upgraded my entire brake system I purchased the caliper kit from Direct Ford parts (TradeMotion) for around $30 for the front calipers. My mechanic did not think I needed it but I asked him to do it anyway just in case. For $30 you are buying substantial peace of mind when it comes to the brakes.

sorry to hijack your thread i have a quick brake question as well if you dont mind?

i changed out one of my front calipers a while back, and then about 2-3 months later i changed the other one, my question is i bought the calipers at two different places and they of course are two different brands, i have a slight pull to one side when braking but not all the time, i am in the process of thinking it might be my pass side bearing gone, butnot sure if this would cause the truck to pull to one side when braking, but would haveing two different kinds of calipers cause this, maybe one it better than the other, i wouldnt think so, but what do you guys think??

First off thanks for all the help guys. mybigredford - think simple first - check air pressure in your tires first, that can do that too.

I would question putting two different calipers on the rotors. One might take more psi to push the plungers out then the other. Could be the reason for pulling to one side.

I read guzzles deal, but I cannot free one of the pins. I have dowsed it in pb blaster for the whole day now and beat on it and everything I can think of and nothing will free it. I am not able to replace with new pin with this one still stuck in the bracket. Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me if the caliper brackets on the rear are different than those on the front? I found a bracket but it says its for the rear. I was just going to order a new bracket and bolts and pins but I could only find these for the rear. If they will work on the front than I am going to order them because going through the different places I have now all of them will make me buy the whole caliper assembly.
