Oil Level

Today after I finished washing and waxing my truck I checked the oil and it has risen from the full mark on the hashed area all the way to where the metal dipstick meets the plastic end...thats like a quarter to half inch above the full mark. I thought maybe because it hadnt been run was why it was showing to be too full so I went out for a 30 minute drive, truck was up to operating temp then shut it down and checked it again with the same result, over full. The oil has a distinct diesel smell..not of raw unburned fuel but more like a diesel exhaust smell. Hope I'm making scense...it smells more like the exhaust pipe on an old mechanical cummins then it does motor oil. I've had the truck about 3 months, give or take a little, and until now the oil level has been spot on full, never over. I took it to the dealership 2 weeks ago for a cold idle miss that they couldn't find but they did reflash the computer. The miss goes away if I put it in gear and let it sit, missing for 6-8 seconds, after that it stops and won't repeat itself until its been sitting and the motors cold. Not sure if its related to the rising oil level or not...just talking out load..LOL. BTW its an 08 Job 1 F-250 with the 6.4 and 3600 miles. I do love this truck though, no comparison to the 06 I had, this is like driving a car..smoothe and quiet!!! Any help or advise will be appreciated, as I'll be leaving in 2 weeks to take a freight conductor course in Overland Park Kansas that lasts for 6 weeks. I don't want any suprises with this thing while I'm gone as this will be my only means of transportation. Thanks John.

I experienced the same thing. I checked the oil level after I filled it and drove 3K and checked. I was shocked that it was way overfilled and I filled it myself the last change and I know it was right below full when I did it. I sucked out the extra 2.0 QTS of oil!!!! and was baffled. I then send in an oil sample to have it come back and say 4.5% fuel in the oil. After research and talking with mother Ford it is common to get oil in the fuel, so they say b/c of the regen cycle. some of the fuel will eventually evaporate and burn out. This is where I was getting the "extra" oil I now keep a closer eye on it b/c I am concerned if I leave it to long then it could go to max overfill and cause some damage. In here others have mentioned the oil level rising and it is attributed to fuel in oil.

it is not fuel to some degree, it is soot. the oil level ise is perfectly normal on the 6.4 and you will notice it more if you change oil by mileage and not hours. you are right about it smelling like a tailpipe, which is due to the soot being in the oil.

They say..... they being ford.... One inch of oil is allowed to be "made" between oil change intervals. After one inch, Bring it in to the dealer, Its got itself a fuel leak. So far.. Ive only had the opertunity to do one high pressure fuel pump.. but it make 30 quarts extra.

Yeah, I wish I had taken a picture of the pump, it has 3 "Heads" on it, It blew one compleatly off, and blew a hole out the bottom, and pushed one of the bolts it sheared off right trough the cover that goes over it... It got some cool points for destruction...

30 quarts is understanable for a pump failure of that nature. if the fuel is flowing and there is a hole in the pump, it will leak into the crankcase.
