CV Boots Replacement
1996 4x4 Exp Sport
I noticed that both of my outer CV boots are swiss cheese - with multiple cracks all in a row.. both sides...
I haven't driven it since I found out about these - I can see the grease on the control arm (right next to the shocks) - so I know they have leaked out...
Don't have any clicks or pops yet, and I don't want to move it until I replace these to save the CV joints...
My question is - can I still drive it short distances as is? or should have have those done first?
Second, can I use those quick boots that are split, and allow you to do the replacement without having to pull the Joint/axle? or are those a joke compared to the real ones?
I just don't want to have to do it again in a year or something, or think they are fine, if those split boots are really not great...
anyone had any luck with those, good or bad?
Thanks
I just don't want to get into it, and have it be more work than just that.
Also, any clues to how to loosen the two bands that are there now? do I need a special tool? these are OEM ford ones
Thanks
NO, you do not need to remove 1/2 shafts, just cut old straps and boots

Awesome! thanks for that info - do you like any particular style of the split boot? do they all glue? or should I get the kind that overlap?
Also, is there a sticky on doing the front brakes on the Explorer - I figured if I'm doing the Boots, I might as well do the brakes too... I have rotors, pads, and rail grease - anything I should replace (clips, etc?)
Thanks so much!
