I have a 2000 5.4L 4x4...I changed the oil. I had tightened the filter but apparently not enough...I drove to the end of the block and saw a lot of smoke...right away I reliezed what I had done. So now I have a few questions.
1. How can tell if I have ruined the motor, I turned the truck off and it will not start back up. I hear a click but nothing.
2. If it is locked up where can I find the best deal on a motor?
I have changed the oil every 8k on this truck since I have had it. There are 260000 on the truck now...I have my fingers crossed and I am hoping I did not ruin the engine.
You could put a breaker bar with a socket onto the crank bolt and try to turn it to see if its locked up..
You really shouldnt need to tighten the filter much.. you should get in the habit of checking under the truck after you changed the oil and started it everytime.
Either the filter was really loose or the old gasket was still on the block, which didnt let it get a good seal.. because if you only drove to the end of the block then it was coming out fast.
Keep us posted
