I've got some questions concerning rearview cameras. I'm having an Alpine IVA-D106 stereo-dvd player installed in my '99 250 SD soon, the unit has a "rear camera input". My questions are-1... Do they make wireless cameras and how expensive are they? If the answer is "no" then disregard the rest of this thread, if it's "yes" should I have my installer add the wiring for the wireless receiver? The reason I need it wireless is I pull a 33' 5th wheel and I don't want to have to run wiring from the back of my 5er to my truck. I would mount the camera to my ladder, and also get 2 receivers, 1 for the truck when pulling the 5er, and 1 to hook up to the tv in the trailer for security when I'm parked. Make any sense, or am I just thinkin' way too much?
Yes you can get a wireless camera, but they aren't exactly wireless. Companies like X-10 make wireless cameras but it's a wireless video transfer but you still need to supply power to the camera and base. If you can do that, then any installer "should" be able to work that up for you for the truck then the trailer when needed.
If you have the rear backup sensor option on your truck, don't bother with the wireless. Some how the frequency of the backup sensor and the wireless camera interfere with one another. I know I got one for xmas and had to remove it from my truck and install on the wife sable.
I don't think you will get very good reception with a wireless camera because of the distance from the back of the trailer to the dash of the truck.
I have a hardwired camera on the back of my trailer and get perfect reception with it! I just ran an RCA extension cable up to the tongue of the trailer that I can plug into a RCA jack next to my trailer light plug.
There have been many reports of interference with the wireless cameras. Everything from baby monitors, to reverse sensors have been reported to mess them up.
Better bet is to contact www.rvcams,com. use me as the referral. They have a number of set-ups specifically for what you want to do, that should connect up to your dash unit.
