I figured I would ask you guys for some help before taking my truck to the dealer. Here is my problem: While driving my truck this weekend, I had what felt like a turbo failure a couple times. The truck had very little power and the stock turbo guage in the dash was not reading any psi. After I shut the truck off and restarted it, the problem went away. This happened twice and then not again for the rest of the weekend. My truck is a 2005 F350. Any advice/suggestions would be great. Thanks
Turbo is starting to stick due to carbon or rust buildup. You could try driving it hard to clean it out, but I'd just get it into the dealer and get a new turbo while you are still under warranty. My truck has a salvage title and no warranty so I pulled the turbo myself and cleaned it but its not a fun job.
My turbo on my 03 is really acting up so I bit the bullet and ordered a rebuilt turbo. I drive my truck hard but that doesn't seem to be doing anything.
I asked about warranty it would be but I will be denied anyways I have a exhaust brake. If I paid for the labour at Ford it would be 500 dollars I don't know if its worth paying it or change it myself.
I have pulled wrenches for quite afew years so I may try this myself it may take me longer but 500 bucks is 500 bucks.
The rebuilt turbo is 1300 dollars exhange which is cheaper than buying a BD turbo which I can't afford right now.
directfordparts.com lists them for around $900. It'll take the better part of a day to swap them out. Get a turbo replacement kit from Ford, contains gaskets, o-rings, and new bolts for about $9. Also, you'll want to put penetrating oil on the 3 turbo-to-pedestal bolts the night before and use a 6-point 10mm wrench to break them loose. Do not use a 12-point wrench or you can round the bolt heads and have to pull the cab.
