warmup nuisance

at about 170 degrees just before the thermostat opens up the truck puts up a hell of a fight. it starts stumbling and running like a bag of ***, i have to hold the gas pedal at 2000 rpms just to keep it from stalling. it really is bothersome, but i havent troubleshot anything yet because thats all it has been is just a bother and not a critical issue. please i know i will hear about carburetor, ignition, fuel pump... but all those things are totally dialed in. so i am really leaning towards cooling system. waterpump, thermostat, radiator, radiator pressure cap? although my cooling system does work like a champ. even in the dead of summer

I would recheck the carb . It sounds like a lean misfire that is caused by hot spots in the engine. with the t-stat closed water temp in the heads can reach 260 degrees.

okay i'll look into that. but i've spent many hours getting my carb fine tuned the way it is. i have all the different size metering rods, jets, and springs; the works. also every so often i check up on my idle mixture with a vacuum gauge. its an edelbrock 600cfm, 1405 model

-running like a bag of a$$.

Check your thermostat. Mine stuck open once and cause it to run rough 'til I fixed it. Did ok after it had warmed up though.

yeah the reason i am suspecting it has something to do with the cooling system is that it happens right before the thermostat opens, but then the rest of the day after that she will do just fine. but like i said its just a nuisance so most likely what i'll do is crack open a six pack of beers and just stare at it for an hour and then call it good.

I would lean more at the automatic choke setting. It's sounds like it may not opening soon enough causing a rich problem. Make sure the bi metal spring is engaged in choke control lever properly. Since most of these are indexed, try sitting it to a leaner setting. If it does it every time, have the air cleaner off and watch the choke butterfly. This will give you an ideal a to when it happens. If this is an electric choke, check the heating element for an open.

I know my 68 is very sensitive to the choke setting during the summer time. During the winter the cold dense air the problem does not show up near as bad.

I vote carb as well. The cooling system idea doesn't really make any sense at all because it's not going to affect how the truck runs.

CN Spots - You were just experiencing the normal old FE "I don't like to do anything when you've just woken me up" gig because the radiator was working too well and keeping the engine cooler than it ought to be, my truck was the same way until I replaced the thermostat.

Danger - I'd bet you'd have the same problem thermostat or not, it's not caused by the thermostat opening/closing, Ford390 is probably right on the money, hot spots (possibly caused by quick cavitation when that stat opens even).
