For some reason, it seems like I just keep picking up trucks from the same year. I just picked up my third 86 f-250HD truck for $750. I also have an 86 chevy c25, so i guess there were lots of 86s. Anyways, this new find is a diesel 4x4, so hopefully I can put together one real nice truck from all three, or maybe two good ones from the three. All run and all are complete trucks. I'm just finally glad I got a 4x4 diesel in one piece. I was afraid I'd have to piece one together from multiple trucks.
Quick question. Is there anything I should check or look for regarding the transfercase and front differential? I have not had a chance to check if it works and I don't want to break anything if there is a specific procedure I should follow.
Everything else seems to work great so far. Rebuilt engine 40K miles ago and it has been sitting for about four years. Got started every six months or so. I'll be replacing all the fluids in the next couple of days. Thanks.
Find a hill in the grass and try to back up it. When it starts spinning, get out and lock the hubs in at the wheels, and then pull the transfer case lever into 4 wheel high. Then continue backing up the hill. If it goes up the hill, everything is working. If not, you will have to do some trouble shooting.
Look at the transfer case lever carefully, and see what the shift pattern is. My diesel has the borg warner 1345 transfer case, and to get it into 4 wheel low, you have to pull it back into 4 wheel high, then pull the lever to your leg, and then pull it back, and then push it away from your leg to get it into 4 wheel low. If you seem to have trouble getting this to work, the lever underneath is probably rusted, and you need to take it off the transfer case and clean and oil it.
