Not sure where I found this site CarComplaints.com - Car Problems, Car Complaints, & Repair/Recall Information but I am seriously considering bailing out of my 2002 Explorer! Is there anyone out there with a 2002 Explorer with over 70,000 miles that hasen't had transmission or bearing trouble? So far I have had my Explorer for three years and only had to replace the alternator @ 68,000 miles. Seems like since all is well now it might be a good time to sell!
Or time to do a simple fluid changeout on it. Seriously, some groups also claimed the Aerostar had transmission problems, and said to buy something like Caravan or Windstar instead. Guess what, Caravan proved to be a worthless piece of junk and a perfectly good design got scrapped.
If you take care of them, they will take care of you. As for the wheel bearings, aren't most of those problems on years after 2002? As far as the tranny problems, if you change the fluid every 30,000 miles, you should have any problems regardless. Ford did botch the tranny design, but did so trying to make smoother softer shifts, based upon customer requests.
NOT a good time to sell any SUV!
I'm real big on preventive maintenance...it has always kept me out of trouble except once with a GM tranny. I do a flush and fill with Mercon V every 50K on my 2000...no problems at 132,000. I also have the dealer repack the front bearings at 50K. Some idiot didn't do a good job on my old Ford pickup years ago, now I live with scarred spindles. It's worth it TO ME, after all, rolling down the road is pretty basic for any vehicle.
