Starter hung up..or switch?

I started my truck today {85 f150 351w} It fired up, but was making a awful sound, sounded like the tranny, I shut it down and was going to re-start to see if that was the problem, when I turned off the key, the starter was trying to start....
I messed with it a bit to get it to stop, nothing worked. I finally put it in gear and let out the clutch, and it stopped, but with a smell of wire burning, It took about 30 sec. for me to be able to get out and disconnect the battery.
What do yall think...starter or ing. switch? Starter has never given me ANY problems prior to this.
Thanks in advance

i would try the solenoid first. test it with nothing hooked up to see if it has continuity between the two big posts.

Do I want continuity or not?

with nothing hooked up you do NOT want continuity, that means its live all the time.. which would mean the coil contacts are welded shut. if it checks out fine then you can move on to checking more expensive and harder to replace things..

Take the small wire from the ignition switch off its solenoid terminal and see if the starter still turns when you connect the battery. If it does, replace the solenoid. If it doesn't, put the ignition switch in "Run" and touch the wire back on its terminal. If it pulls in the solenoid then you have a switch problem.

OK I just checked for continuity with all wires off and there is none. I hooked it all back, left OFF the ing. wire, put the post back on the battery, it started to start.....?
SO We think solenoid???? I replaced that thing about 8 months ago.....

Yeah, sounds like the starter solenoid alright. Especially if it tried starting with the small ignition wire removed.

Where did you buy the solenoid?

Most aftermarket solenoids are garbage in my opinion.

I would get a motorcraft one from the Ford dealer. Save some headaches in future.
