I think Chris is right, you may have inadvertently picked up a street elbow which reduces on one side. Either that, or you have some kind of custom intake setup that uses larger hose. Can you post a photo or two?

Try going to an electrical supply house and get a 3 1/2" emt 45* you'll have to cut it to length though,

Just put my filter on tonight, done in about 15min. Had some 4" exhaust pipe left over from doing a friends exhaust and CCV mod.
