I have a break away hitch on my boat. A freind put a locking hitch pin through the hitch so no one could steal it. He lost the key....Its boating season.
My question is what is the easiest way to cut the pin. Sawzal? or do I need to get a diamond cut off wheel.... The pin is nothing special...just a locking one...
If you know someone else that has a lock like it the key will probably fit. Nephew borrowed my toter home a while back and somehow lost the key. I bought another hitch pin like it at northern tool and it fit.
Attacking the pin is a bad idea. I tried that. Its really hard to get an effective sawzall bite on it, and it is very hard metal.
After a half hour of wrestling the sawzall, I went back into the garage and returned with a corded drill and some drill bits. Two minutes of drilling and I was done.
Attack the lock. Drill out the locking mechanism, drill right into where the key goes.
Given how easy it was for me you might be fine with a cordless drill.
Good point - the guts of most locks are of soft metal so that if someone tries to jimmy them they mangle. A drill should blow the whole cylinder away in minutes, and the thing will come right open.
