Thanks for all the input guys, I should have been a little more clear of my intentions. I'm looking for a long term truck for family use only and pulling of a 5th wheel camper and the odd 4 wheeler haul. I am looking for longevity, power and fuel economy, as much as possible. thanks again
James, that is what these guys were just telling you. The 7.3 is the work horse of the industry. Pull anything you want and go down the road all day long. I can't tell you how many miles I have towing with my truck. And the thing keeps going and going. Kind of like the battery thing.
I would say the 7.3 is great for relibality but not the most powerfull stock but now with all the mods it can run with the 04 6.0 that we have all day long just fine!!!!

209k on mine now and still runs like new. I have it modded as far as I feel it can handle. It will last me the rest of my life, I just wish it had the bells and whistles the '03's offered. But there is no way I would give it up for any of the newer ones unless my exact motor could be installed along with the deal. It is as fast and quick as I need, I can blow the doors off of any stock 6.0 and any Dodge I have tangled with so far. If I don't know up front I can win a drag race I just ignore them. I am unhappy with the transmissions though, as is everyone else.
272K miles here, I am right around 315 RWHP, and am happy. my truck has towed a tag or 5er for at least 100K of those 272K miles. No major failures, I am even still running the stock tranny(although on borrowed time). I would not hesitate to hook my 5er up to my truck and go cross country tomorrow.
The 7.3 is really a simple engine. First look under the hood is a little daunting, but further research here will have you understanding it in no time.
I am amazed at what these trucks will do. I just made a run to cheney, wa with 37's and an 8000 lb trailer. Did 1700 miles in 36 hours straight and averaged just over 10 miles to the gallon. I dont think I would trust to many other vehicles with over 180000 miles to do that.
