Why do ricers put HUGE spoilers on the rears of their cars. I understand the smaller contoured ones, for cornering down force and such. But the huge drag type, I don't get it. Front wheel drive cars use the down force in the front, my friend runs it souped up. He has the smaller rear contoured spoiler for stability for cornering. The huge rear would pull away from down force on the front end, by pushing the rear down and the front up. Am I missing something or are they just trying to look cool.

P.S. here is an idea they all need to grasp: instead of sounding stupid with the folgers can exhaust, try buying a car ('Stang) with a V-8 if you want the thing to sound good.
Explanation: It is a case of arrested development. Kids don't play outside anymore or ride bikes around the neighborhood. If they do ride, they are fenderless mountain bikes. Most of us got past this stage by putting big mudflaps and streamers on our bikes in place of the big wings and decals of today's youth. In place of fart mufflers, we equipped our bike fenders with playing cards or balloons to make that cool, motor sound as we ripped up and down the street. Same ideas exactly, just at different ages.
Ever watch Britsh Touring car racing on Speed? Or any kind of racing that involves those small Japanese/European cars? They all have them. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday. They're just profilin'.
When I was watching a IROC series race they explained what was done to the cars to prepare for the race. One statement they made (The Dodges came with a large spoiler) was that they had to greatly increase the size of the stock spoiler and increase the angle because wind tunnel test proved that THE STOCK SPOILER WAS TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE BELOW 200 mph.
Most stock spoilers do pretty much nothing, they are there for looks. Those huge wings they put on don't do a whole lot either because they aren't tuned for that particular car and what it's setup for. That trunk couldn't hold much for downforce I don't think. Some do have it setup to pull up instead of push down. Most of the kids my age buy them because they look "cool".
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
i need ta get me onna them spoilers and put it on my bronco. an aluminum one about 2 feet high on the roof would accent the mud, rust, primer, and the homeade wooden pickup body quite nicely. id get much more traction to the ground turnin them tight corners in the woods too! and just to think of the looks on the neighbor's faces when i go tearin up the road with my lack of an exhaust screaming for attention. what's that boy gonna do with that wing? he thinks that truck gonna fly or somethin?
Most spoilers are for cosmetic reasons alone.. the tacky ones, like the APC wings sold at pep boys, have ABSOLUTELY no use except cosmetic..
AS far as downforce... Downforce at the back does not take downforce AWAY from the front. It just adds more force to the back. Say, for instance, at high speed, that the car was oversteering? FWD or RWD, downforce on the back would help give the rear wheels traction.
As far as a STOCK wing, it probably has no effect.. but if you add a huge wing, it will affect the dynamics of your car at speeds MUCH lower than 200... probably around 100 or so. Generally, though, it just adds drag and slows the car.. but if the car has enough power, the handling characteristics of the added downforce WOULD outweigh the drag caused. But this is usually not the case with the typical honda. Maybe a boosted, gutted honda with an ITR motor intended only for track use.
Do not think that any "ricer" is worried about downforce though, but truly performance tuned Hondas DO use spoilers.. look at the fastest Hondas... they have spoilers on the back, but they are flat and nowhere close to what a "ricer" wing would look like. also, they have front lip spoilers.
INTERESTING FACT: The Saleen S7, driven at 70 mph, has enough downforce that it could be driven UPSIDE DOWN.
