1988 Ford Ranger
This truck has a 2.3L 4cyl, with 185k miles. How long will that motor last and tranny? Its a 5speed. It has stock tires short box and standard cab. Its for sale for 1g. Oh, and if anyone knows what kind of mpg will it get. Its also a 4x4...

I have the identical truck except mine is 2wd. I replaced my truck's bed with a utility box, which is significantly heavier than the stock 6 ' original, and I pull a 14' enclosed trailer daily loaded with my lawn equipment for my lawn service. That being said, I can not tell you how long the specific truck you described will last without knowing a lot of background information about it, but I can tell you that mine has 217,800 miles on her currently, and the only "major" work ever done to the 2.3L was replacement of the timing belt at 205,000 miles. Other than that it's been the usual; plugs, wires, oil, distributor cap, rotor, etc. The engine is getting tired, but still performs reliablly. The engines rear main seal is leaking a quart or so every 500 miles, but I am really hard on my truck, I am lucky it is in as good a shape as it is. My radius arm bushings need replacement. I am blown away that I have never had to put a clutch in my truck! Hope that the info about my truck may relate to answering your question.

Mine is the same as yours but an '85 instead of '88 and it has 126k on it. I am the second owner, and I paid 1k for it also. The engine runs fine and I took a 200+ mile trip in it about 2 months back, and got 23 mpg. The only things I have done to it so far was a battery (it sat for 8 years before I bought it) and a fuel filter. I am told the timing belt has been changed once.
