Polk Audio has details on why different boxes sound, well, um...differently.

A sealed box will have tighter, cleaner bass, and even deeper depending on the application. The box a subwoofer sits in acts like a spring...protecting the sub from overexcursion and allowing tighter, punchier bass. A ported box has a tuned port that maximizes the sound at a certain frequency (what frequency that is, is dependant on the length and diameter of the port)... A ported box will tend to have louder bass because it utilizes the port as free airspace... it moves more air. But with a ported box the frequency curve drops faster resulting in "quieter" low bass. Ported boxes are more efficient as well...requiring less power to get louder. I prefer a sealed box over ported because I do not make my own boxes...but with a correctly tuned ported box you can have both SPL (big boom bass) and very accurate bass. Hope this helps a lil' bit.

a ported box is ran the most anywhere, it is def. louder but not as tight, to me a sealed box is stupid if you buy big speakers, a ported box will sound better an get the most sound out of them. i recommend a ported box over a sealed box anyday, ported just sounds better all the way around
