99 Explorer Stereo systen replacement help needed!
Im working on a plan to swap out the stock, premium stereo for something sweeter. I have the console cd changer, 4 speaker, stereo. It is not the Mach system as far as I know. Anyway, here's my plan.
Im partial to Pioneer for value and performance so Im sticking with them (I also plan on adding XM eventually). Prices from Crutchfield.
HU - Pioneer DEH-P4400 ($200)
Speakers - Four TS-A6867 6x8 ($200 total)
Changer - CDX-P1270 (12 CD) ($220)
Now, here's the tricky part. I do not know if my stereo has the factory amp in the rear? Where is it located inside the truck? With a better headunit and better speakers, do I still need to use the stock amp or am I better off without it (not really thinking about an aftermarket amp)? Any suggestions and/or info at all is appreciated!
Thanks
JDP

Your amp should be located behind the rear panel in the back of you X on the passenger side. If you are not planning on adding any amps when you change out the system, then you can use the factory amp and it will be fine. I would use the Metra adapters - makes it basically a plug-n-play install. Then you will not have to run any new speaker wires, etc. Just make sure to hook the power antennea to the harness so that the factory amp turns on. That is the way I did mine at the beginning also...

My suggestion is to spend an extra $100 on the HU and upgrade to the Pioneer 7400MP. I have it in my truck and it is without a doubt the best CD player I have ever had, let me tell you why...it has a High Pass Filter, allows you to filter different frequencies of bass to your speakers. I have the Kenwood 5x7's (no amp) and can turn the HPF on 80Hz and crank the volume to 50 and don't have to worry about the speakers distorting from bass. Don't be fooled by the 6400 model, it looks the same but does not have the HPF or play MP3's. The 7400MP plays MP3's, has a subwoofer control with a Low Pass Filter (only shows up if you have the remote hooked up to an amp). To say the least I am very impressed. As far as buying everything from Crutchfield...they are an excellent company but their prices aren't the best...just my opinion.

Then where would you suggest I purchase from? Keeping in mind that one of the big advantages of Crutchfield is their service and that they include most adapters and the like free of charge with your kit. Anywhere better to look?

First I would shop locally and see what is available, sometimes you can catch really good sales. But as we all know you can almost always find it cheaper on the internet. Check out the link below, it has a bunch of sites to browse through. I haven't been through all of them yet so I can't tell you which one is cheaper.
The best advise I can give when ordering online is to call the company first to make sure they have the product in stock and find out what their shipping policy is.
Hope this helps.
If you do get the 7400MP I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

I just did some research and sure enough, I could save about $150 on my system buying from other than Crutchfield. Now, if I were to buy the actual hardware without adapters and such included (as Crutchfield does), what all would I need? I decided to use the stock amp with the new unit so Im guessing I will need to following pieces:
1. HU install kit w/ amp integrator harness and regular harness
2. Ford speaker wire to Pioneer speaker adapters
3. HU, Speakers, Changer
Will I need the adapter for the antenna that I see on some websites?
Im a bit confused about the amp integration harness. Is this something that would plug in seperate from the regular speaker wire harness or does it plug in line with that harness? Its a little confusing and I dont want to buy the wrong thing.
Thanks

Starting with 1998 the Explorer without the Mach system has an amp integrated with the factory head unit thus no need to worry about an amp bypass. I put an Alpine 7892 in my 1998 Explorer as well as the Pioneer TS-A6895 speakers in the doors. Big improvement! Anyway I hope this helps...

If you are going to replace the head unit Look at the Alpine 7892..it is very nice..also get the Scosche FD2 wiring kit...got mine at Walmat for about $6. I ordered a Scosche FD1300 install kit. It is very nice and has a pocket that is nearly one din in size. Many kits will only hold a CD. I ordered that kit from Sounddomain.com. Very inexpensive. Good luck

DEH-P440 instead of DEH-P4400. The specs on this unit indicate HPF and LPF which the 4400 does not list. Is that the same thing that you were talking about on the 7400MP model that helps with distortion?
If so, then Ill probably go with that model instead.
Thanks
