'85 engine rebuild

I am in the process of tearing down my I-6 engine in order to replace the block and was wondering if I have to drain the tranny to pull the block out. Its an auto if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

You WILL want to disconnect and plug the cooler lines that run from the transmission to the radiator. Remove them completely unless you are sure you can get the engine out without damaging them. Then plug the radiator and the transmission ports.

Otherwise, there should be no need to drain the transmission. Take care to keep the torque converter seated on the transmission input shaft when you pull the engine. Otherwise you will have to deal with the torque converter draining itself all over the place.

you going to do any upgrades? make sure you dont get a block with an overbore of 60 otherwise the motor will run hot. running a bit higher compression with this motor really wakes it up as well. are you having a shop do the rebuild or are you buying a motor from who?

I already have a stock rebuilt motor from a shop called Jones automotive. The only upgrades I am making are going from a single barrel carb and intake to a 4 barrel. I also got rid of most of the old emissions crap that was on there and exhaust changes.

Its a full rebuild though. New heads new exhaust, including headers.
