Ok so an ex-boss of mine with a penchant for killing vehicles blew up one of my old job's work trucks. Apparently she ran it for about 30 miles with little to no coolent or oil in it. Needless to say the motor failed. It had a 351 windsor in it, and it's a 1992 ford f-250. It has an automatic that I'm assuming is a C-6. Nobody in the area will do a swap for them for less than $4k. I'm wondering which years of windsor will swap in, and how hard the job would be to do it. one of the shops that they took it to said that it would only take certain years of windsor engines, but wouldn't say which ones. Thanks in advance for all the help.
Any 351w will drop right in there and bolt up, but you'll want a later motor to avoid potential water passage issues between the heads and intake and the smog era motors. Anything from the mid '80 and up is good, and the '94+ motors have a nice roller cam and will make more power. The 5.8 I have in my '90 was originally an '85 351HO motor.
The most obvious difference would be a timing chain cover change, to work with the reverse rotation water pump for the serpentine belt system. The 351 windsor really didnt change many bolt holes that assosories use or heads mate up to on the block. To get roughly the same performance as the previous engine you will want the late model heads especially because the 351W was produced during the leaded fuel era as well as the unleaded fuel era. As the computer oriented people would term it, virtually plug and play.
thanks guys I'll pass it along. I think that I can swap the heads onto an older one and the reverse drive pump if I've got to, but I'll look for a later one. This cleared a lot up for me. I didn't figure that there was a whole lot of difference, but if anyone was to know it would be you guys.
