OK, I will soon be on my fourth starter from Schuck's (Parts America). I am usually a very patient and mellow person but frustration has turned to anger. Originally, I turned in my core for the core charge, and now I want to return the third starter for a full refund and get one from a dealership. Should I be refunded my core also since I am essentially returning another core? I ain't sure if anger is blinding me now or now. (Sidenote: Usually frustration like this makes me throw a bunch of lead downrange.)
Thanks all.
Anger subsided. Hulk smash helped to gain clarity. Just going to get one from the dealership, Titus-Will Ford. Good prices and service questions answered.
i got the third starter for my truck off ebay for $80 and it works awesome i got it in 3 days and its a brand new starter not a reman i have had it in for a while now and i think it spins better than the more expensive ones, the guy i bought mine off of his seller id on ebay is wyan919 and he has almost perfect feedback from almost 1200 transactions.and you dont have to send in a core.hope this helps.cause i priced the starters at autozone and schucks and about crapped when i compared it toi the one i got off ebay
The problem is not the warranties or if they stand behind it. Schucks (Parts America) and others often give a lifetime warranty. The problem is that these starters don't seem to last very long. I am on the 4th starter since November. The most recent one lasted all of a day. I, honest to God, don't want to spend time under my truck when I have to be at work. I am a construction contractor. Self employed, just a dog trying to earn his bone. I don't work on automobiles and trucks very often. Diesels are new to me and my brain hurts trying to absorb all the new info. I think it means I am learning. Don't count on it though.
Things I have learned about diesels:
Glow plugs
glow plug relays
injectors
compression differences between gas and diesel
IP's
IP timing
fuels
coolants
additives
brakes
axles
guys in shops can be complete opinionated meatheads
just about everything you need to know is on this forum here somewhere
this is the best place for info
If you do not have large capacity batteries and cables in excellent shape, the starter is not getting full current flow and fails early.
If you have air intrusion and have to crank the engine a lot to start it, early starter failure.
Bad glow plugs, excessive cranking, early starter failure.
I know there are days in the construction business that it seems like you start your engine 300 times during the day, then other times it only gets started twice, or at least that is how it is for me.
4 starters since November tells me you have something else causing the problem.
Just need to figure out what it is.
