Question Should I go for it?

Hello all,

I'm back and after finding no diesels in my price range I have come across a gas superduty that looks pretty good.

I'm pretty sure I can pick this truck up for cheap since I know both the GM and his son who work at the store.

Here is the link:
AP Ford - 2003 Ford F-250 - Stock Number: 45376A

Its a 5.4L V8...Dunno much about them, are they any good? Last a long time? What mods can you do to them for more power? How is the gas mileage?

Need opinions...pretty sure I can get $7500 for my trade in.

Thanks

NOTE: no price is listed because the truck is undergoing some minor repairs at the moment and therefore not quite ready to sell at the moment...I just know it is a very nice truck and if me buddy hadn't just bought his diesel f250 he would have bought this one to fix and sell since it is in nice condition.

The fuel mileage will suck. They all suck, these are heavy trucks!

My 5.4L (a 2007 3V engine) gets 16 MPG highway, 12-14 MPG mixed, 12-14 city.

The 5.4L will last a long time, the only problem with the 5.4L (well, any of the 2004 and older Triton gas engines) is they will spit out spark plugs and strip the spark plug holes if you do not follow exact procedures when changing plugs and checking them.

The 2V 5.4L engine isn't the most powerful, but you should be able to easily tow 6-7000 pounds with that truck. Some say they are underpowered, but you should drive the truck and decide for yourself.

The stock 4R100 transmission also isn't the best made, but it can be rebuilt into a bulletproof transmision.

Ditto to what redford said. If you want mileage get a scooter...lol Towing heavy loads get a diesel. But if you just want a SD for moderate to light towing or none at all the 5.4 isn't bad at all. I love mine. Right now mine is set up for trail running but still sees a lot of street use. I'm getting 10.2 overall. But I have 4.88 gears and I am running 41" tires and still love driving it. Yea I drive a company truck for work so the mileage doesn't kill me...

All I would like to add is if you were looking for a diesel and want the diesel power you will be let down with the 5.4L 2V. The 5.4L is a dang good truck engine but if you are expecting diesel power you are not going to find it with the 5.4L. If you were just looking for a diesel to have one or just looking for a SD in general I highly recommend the 5.4L.

I am just looking for an SD in general. I tow very rarely and when I do it is light stuff. I only wanted a diesel for the mileage but with diesel prices going up, it sort of negates any benefits.

I am looking at it more because of the more ample space in the extended cab part. I would prefer a shortbed, but I'm not being picky.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
