I sold my '96 F-250 to a buddy a month ago - in excellent mechanical condition of course - and it died on him last weekend. I'll told him I'll go with him to take care of it, but the truck is 2.5 hours away at a relatives house. When we go to get it I want to be prepared with everything it might need. Here's the story:
No previous symptoms. He starts the truck up and gets a couple hundred yards down the road, the truck loses power relatively quickly and eventually dies. He said it felt like it wasn't getting fuel. He swapped the fuel filter and cranked it 5 times in 10 sec. spurts with no luck restarting. Based on my experience restarting a completely drained 7.3, that should just about be enough to get it restarted.
My approach will be to first crank it some more. If that does not do it I will check the codes with my reader. If the codes don't indicate the problem I will replace the fuel pump (mechanical). I may also swap the CPS with the spare in the glove box.
If it still is not running after all that what else should I try?
Check oil level in HPOP reservoir. Add if low and start.
Definately change the CPS.
Check fuel pressure with a tire gauge before you change fuel pump. That job is a PITA I hear.
