I would have also made an adapter but the tank sending unit had a smaller hole and I couldn't get the stock float through. I couldn't see a way of combining the two sending units together to make one that would work.
Wow Bob, it sounds like both of our sceintific set-ups were almost exactly the same! Great minds.....(and ours too - tee hee).
I had a problem with my 55 like the one you are discribing above for, I'm assuming, your 49!
In looking at it, I discovered you can use a center grooved/mounted float or an offset (on the end) grooved float. Offset one might go through where the center one won't.
I also discovered that there are a couple that are a little smaller in diameter - usually off foreign cars.
But, if you do use an offset float instead of the centered one, you have to bend the float arm a little in the direction of the groove to keep the stupid thing from dinking on the side of the tank with slosh at every stop light!!!!!
Dink Dink Dink Dink Dink---like to drive ya nuts!
Or, you could probably make a float that would go through using a thin 3/4" copper tube with caps soldered on the ends (water pipe and caps). I soldered it to the arm lengthwise like a toilet bowl float - worked great.
Of course I also installed an emergency three gallon gas bottle on a "camper (twin tank) valve" just in case!
not to put salt in a wound, but being married to an English teacher, it's actually:
"I am an idiot."
in case you're concerned with such particulars...
I too plan to do this tank and am taking notes. thanks for the segway into a tech question; it was a nice scenic route.

if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?
In case you're concerned with such particulars, the word is actually "segue". A "segway" is that funny two-wheeled scooter. Your English teacher would agree.
I will have to check the specifics on the VDO gauge that I am using and verify that with the info that I recieved here(Thanks guys and gals). I believe that my problem is the rotation that I installed the sending unit, since it is mounted on the front lower end of the tank. I will check that out first and break out my cardboard beer box (should be able to find one of those around here). Again thanks, I will let ya'll know where I get.
That is what ya get for goin' custom,Rodney--haha!! I am glad truck ran good with the wife in it, she is not fond of break-downs--haha! I hope you figure it out!! Bill
