71 360 with original 120000 miles. It is tired but when warm the truck runs pretty smooth. My problem is when initially running or cold the truck acts cold blooded coughing back through the carb. No matter if I throttle gently or get on it. Once warm it runs pretty well. I have one step leaner from the scale in the book I believe #8 on the power mode. A needle and jet. No change in the spring. I have a 1 in. spacer with a gasket on either side of the spacer. The air screws are at one turns out. Elevation is 2300 ft. Once the truck is warm it goes away for the most although still seems sluggish on the bottom. I wonder if it is the pump or the spacer or the spring I'm just frustrated and want to try to fix before getting a full tune up. Maybe it is the electric choke since it improves after warm up. I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would have to say it sounds like the choke, like you suspect. Make sure you have power to the choke when the engine is running, and that the choke is properly grounded. These chokes don't ground internally through the choke tang like a stock carb; you have to ground the spring separately.
If when I start up during warm up the rpm increases and when I tap the throtle the rpm drops down shouldn't that happen auto if the choke is working properly?
Yes it should. When you first start it, it will be idling fast. If you tap the gas the RPMs will drop. After some driving and the choke has opened, the RPMs will settle to curb idle. If that is happening then your choke is probably working. You can adjust how long the choke stays shut.
If I start it up and walk away then come back after a few minutes when it should be warm it will be running revved up then with one tap on the throttle it idles down to curb idle.
That's about how long mine takes; it's so warm where I'm at that it takes no time at all to warm up. If you want your choke on longer, richen it. You can adjust it by loosening the 3 screws holding the choke cap to the housing and rotating it (should be marked which way is which) and then retighten the screws.
I thought that with the choke working properly it would drop the idle down automatically after warm up but mine will rev up and stay there intil I tap the trottle.
