don't buy fuel from pilot

well on my way back from Indy yesterday to get my 24' car hauler I had to stop for fuel in indiana. Pilot advertised 449 so I stopped in. It ended up being 489 because of a visa/mastercard surcharge. For some reason they are still in the stone age and don't do normal business with either of those two most common card companies.

Pilot and Flying J are both on my list of places to not stop at. Get a Loves card and at least get some free stuff once in a while.

At the Pilot truckstops, if you use cash or a debit card, then it will be one price. If you use a credit card, then it is another. I always stop at Pilot and have never had a problem. There are lots of them around here since their headquarters is in Knoxville.

I've used the Pilot in Clear Lake, IA but don't remember the price being different for credit card. That extra charge should be posted on the pump.

I'm looking into the Wright Express cards for my business. I have a "house charge" at a local gas station but the sob that owns the place is a crook. I have seen him raise his prices 2-3 times in one day. And you have to check your slip against the pump, he's good for adding some $$ to your slip.

Jim, those are the kind of stations that never see me again. The fuel situation is bad enough without some dude ripping you off.

Yup but the unfortunate thing is he is the only one with diesel in town. That's why I'm getting the fleet card. This was I don't have to give the co. credit card to my employees to fuel up. I have gotten into some head butting with the owner so he dosen't dare do it to me. The last one was with the station full of people and I called him a thief and threatened to call the cops, his attitude changed real quick after that!

You hit on the major reason you seen a different price from what was on the sign but it had nothing to do with the credit card (well maybe a couple pennies maybe even as much as 8cents) The reason was the state of Indiana and the way they do fuel taxes. If you look closely there is a 25cent difference in price between commercial vehicle and car diesel prices. Basically commercial vehicles with a ICC or US DOT number do NOT pay the road taxes at the pump but rather pay it on their IFTA fillings quarterly. (I don't remember what the exact amount is anymore since I don't own my own truck but it's somewhere in the 20-30 cent range I was thinking it was 27 which would be rght when you include 3 cents for a credit card)

Monster,

That explains a LOT!

Since the sign out on the highway would have been for the OTR guys, and the locals already know what the sign prices mean, it makes sense that out-of-staters would be the ones to feel they were stabbed.

At least until they understood what you just explained.

Thanks for clearing that up.

around here i been told when using a CC.. the card takes most of what little profit the stations get for transaction cost....they would rather have cash..one place i stop at..when i fill my tank and use cash..he drops the price a little....
