I lost all the display on my '98 EB explorer radio today, It still works OK, there just isn't any display. Can I fix it? Why do all the newer Ford radios have so many problems? Are they buying them from radio shack?
im not very familar with those factory cd players but you can find a wiring guide that has the colors and there meanings (dim, ground etc.)
take out the cd player and check the wiring. make sure all they wires are not seperated, thats the only quick fix i can think of, it just may be a broken cd player, if your car is still under warrant just take it to the dealer and they will replace it, if not buy an aftermarket cd player, you will be alot happier with one
thanks for your reply, Ross. I think I'm gonna have to pull the radio and do a little pokin' around inside it. It works all right, just doesn't "light up". Just seems to me that now-adays automobile manufacturers build a 30k price tag and then fill it with 30 cent malaysian junk. Simple is better
You are experiencing a common problem with the Explorer factory head unit...It isn't a lot more expensive to replace it with a good head unit from Alpine. Look at it this way.....a great reason to tell the wife the unit is on the blink...and buy some new speakers too and you will be very happy...
I had the same problem with my 98 explorer. The problem is internal to the radio. I am a techinician by profession. After acquiring the diagrams I found that the Power Supply and Oscilator module gets very hot to a point the circuit board become discolored. I feel it could be poor thermal management due to a poor design. I took mine apart and found some poor solder joints as a result of the internal heat. After resoldering the joints the radio display has worked fine for a year. A gentlemen at Omicron Electronics in Carrollton Texas help me some with drawings. If you are not a competent technician this will cost bucks to resolve. Good Luck!
Djrrl, I would like to get those diagrams, if it is alright to hand them out. I have a friend with the same problem, except half of his display works sometimes.
