My truck seems to need to crank over quite a bit to get running. Otherwise it runs just fine. I have a new battery and alternator that were replaced separately - I only replaced the battery as I thought that it was the problem.
Is there anything that can be causing this? I am getting no codes yet. It does it when I use my remote start or by key. I would say that you have to hold the key about twice for about 3-4 seconds for it to start, if you let go too soon it just dies. It used to start fairly quick.
I thought about the IAC valve as well but the truck has a nice solid smooth idle, it doesnt fluctuate much at all. The truck seems to have lots of power and is getting pretty decent fuel economy. I'm thinking of maybe replacing the fuel filter, it has been about 15000 km or more since I last changed it with a Motorcraft one. If not then maybe the fuel pump is the culprit... I sure hope not. This next weekend I will be taking the truck out camping and dont want to be stranded.
The IAC only comes into play once you are idling which takes place AFTER you get the engine started(which is what you're having a problem with). You have to start before you can idle. With a bad IAC the engine will start, but it will shut off immediately (unless you depress the throttle pedal enough to keep the butterfly cracked open sufficiently to allow air to flow into the engine). Hard starting is back to the basics:air, fuel, spark and compression. Go fish.
Actually, a bad IAC valve CAN cause a "no start" condition. If it is stuck closed, there is no air and the engine cannot breath. To test, crack the throttle 1/4 way and see if the engine starts as quickly as it used to.
If not, you've probably got slow build-up of fuel pressure, usually caused by a restricted filter or a weak pump.
To test, turn the key to RUN without hitting start. Wait 3 seconds, then switch OFF. Repeat several times, then hit the START position. If it now fires right up, that confirms the sluggish pressure buildup.
ProjectSHO89... thanks for the input. But I'm too late to test it. I picked up a new filter on the way home from work and replaced it before I came in and checked my post.
I tried the crack the throttle test and it made no difference.
The old filter did seem somewhat clogged. Blowing on it allowed very little air to pass through it. I started it a couple of times and it seemed better. I'll see tomorrow how it goes. If it is still not cranking over quick enough I will try the slow pressure build up test.
