so i was thinkin of removing the AIH but was wondering how much this heater actually aids in starting the truck.
im not too worried about it in the summer but the winter months can get kinda cold up here.
The AIH does not help with starting at all, and it does not aid in warming up the engine. The sole purpose of the AIH is to reduce white smoke on cold idle by bringing in warmer air into the combustion chamber. However, it only kicks on under certain conditions: in cold weather, with the truck in park (or neutral with the e-brake for sticks), high idle has to be activated, and the glow plugs must be off. In many cases, the glow plugs can stay on for up to 2 minutes after you have started your truck, so the AIH is off during that time. As soon as you start driving, the AIH shuts off as well.
As for the amount of white smoke that it helps reduce, that's debatable. I really didn't see much of a difference after taking mine out. Some have noticed only a slight difference. For reference, the older 7.3L's and the Van PSD's don't have it, so getting rid of it won't hurt anything.
Like Pocket said, it's not needed and for the couple bucks for the plug, get rid of it. The heater element is rather big so if anything, you'll feel better knowing it's not in the way of getting air into your engine. I didn't see any seat-of-the-pants power improvement but it's got to have some benefit having it out of there.
