It has to be a 315 75 16 tire
it has to be made by a US company
And it has to be as quiet on the highway as possible. After 2 sets of BFG ATs that I love, I'm ready for a quieter tire.
So far I've found the Cooper Discoverer ATR, but not much else... Help?
It is a great tire, doesn't meet his US company spec though. Also, I have the Toyo AT in a 315/75/16 and its only a D rated tire, so I wouldn't do a lot of heavy towing with it. I'll be getting Toyo MT in E rated next, unless I step up to 18s then the choices increase.
Cooper and Goodyear are the only 2 big "American" tire companies left...
Both manufacturers also sell tires under other brands. I know Kelly tire is Goodyear and I am sure there are a few others. Cooper has Mickey Thompson, Dick Cepek, Pro Comp and a few others...
I recently when from Cooper Discoverer AT's (not the same tire as the ATR) over to the Goodyear Silent Armor.
MUCH QUIETER.
Check out the Goodyear SA's... just don't overinflate them, they get squirmy... For the first time in my life, I have less air pressure in the REAR tires and I'm happy...
Krewat, Did the silent armors have any effect on your MPG?
Funny thing.
I went from Cooper 265/75R16's (31.6 inch height) to the Goodyear SA's at 285/75R16 (32.8 inch height).
Around 4-5 months before that, I put in headers. No other changes.
Using a GPS to check actual miles traveled each time, I go into Upstate NY for Labor Day every year.
Round trip, I average around 15.5-16.2 MPGs every time.
Last trip, with the GPS checking miles, and I definitely knew how much fuel went in, I got 17.2 MPGs on that same 450 mile round-trip.
Two things to consider. 1) The headers. 2) The tires decreased my gearing (3.73's) about 3.8%
So, I did not lose any MPGs with the Goodyears. Or, the headers made such a big difference that if I DID lose any MPGs with the Goodyears, the headers more than made up for it.
Or, the headers did nothing, and the tires made the difference.
